They barely scraped enough money together to start the Australian Ice Hockey League season, but now the Canberra Brave are flying towards their maiden finals appearance with a new major sponsor.
ActewAGL has signed on as the major sponsor, enabling the Brave to send its full contingent of playing and coaching staff to Melbourne for the finals weekend on August 30-31.
Despite securing a finals spot, captain Mark Rummukainen said the Brave wanted to build momentum for the playoffs, beginning with this weekend's double-header against the Adrenaline in Adelaide.
Rummukainen was a rookie when the Canberra Knights, as they were known before this year, last won the Goodall Cup in 1998.
It has already been a fairytale season for the Brave, who are second on the ladder and have a chance to take top spot.
"We want to get a bit of rhythm going before we get to Melbourne and hopefully win the whole thing," Rummukainen said.
It will be the Brave's second match against the Adrenaline this year. The Adrenaline won the first game before another game was cancelled because Adelaide's bus crashed on the way to the stadium.
"It's still going to be a tough weekend because they can still make finals, so they're going to push us hard and they're a real quality team," Rummukainen said. "So it'll be good couple of games."
