Canberra Cavalry catcher Robbie Perkins called into Australia squad for WBC qualifiers

Canberra Cavalry catcher Robbie Perkins has been called in to the Australia squad for next week's World Baseball Classic qualifiers in Sydney.

Perkins has been brought in as cover for Perth Heat catcher Matt Kennelly, who broke his arm playing in the Australian Baseball League at the end of November and hasn't been able to recover in time.

The 21-year-old joins Cavs starting pitcher Steven Kent as the only two Canberrans in the 28-man roster.

Australia start their campaign against the Philippines at Blacktown on Thursday at 7.30pm, with South Africa and New Zealand also vying for a WBC berth - only the winner of the qualifiers advances to the WBC in the USA in March 2017.
