Canberra Cavalry starting pitcher Louis Cohen gets first ABL win against Perth Heat

Plucked from Canberra Baseball first grade two weeks ago, Cavalry starting pitcher Louis Cohen has his first Australian Baseball League win after a dominant performance in Perth on Friday night.

The Cavs were able to capitalise on his work on the mound to beat the Perth Heat 3-2 to remain two wins behind ladder leaders Brisbane Bandits.

Cohen pitched 6.1 innings and only gave up one earned run before his bullpen came in to close the game down.

Canberra started well, shortstop Jason Leblebijian's sacrifice fly finished off fellow infielder River Stevens' triple to open the scoring in the top of the first inning.

Leblebijian (back stiffness) didn't last the game, with Cavalry manager Michael Collins opting not to risk his defensive star and he might rest him for the rest of the Perth series.

The Heat responded with former Major Leaguer Luke Hughes levelling the scores in the second, before Cavs catcher Robbie Perkins and third-base Aaron Sayers both drove in runs to put the visitors in control in the fourth.

Hughes and Canberra first-base Jason Sloan exchanged words the following inning, which led to both benches clearing for some push-and-shove.

A Sayers defensive error allowed Perth to halve the deficit in the bottom of the seventh, but Canberra was able to hold on.

The series will wrap up on Sunday at 4.05pm, following Saturday night's game three.
