Jones is tied for 36th and will resume at six-under-par, with Millar one shot further back in 48th going into the last 18 holes at The Hills Golf Course in Queenstown.
They will need to do something spectacular to be in the mix for the $950,000 tournament, with Kristopher Mueck and Jordan Zunic the joint overnight leaders on minus 15.
Jones and Millar both fired two-under-par 70s on Saturday.
Jones' bogey on the par four 11th was his only blemish to go with birdies on the fourth, 15th and 16th holes.
It was in stark contrast to Millar, the Gold Creek professional having five birdies and three bogeys in a rollercoaster round.
Millar dropped a shot on the par five first but rebounded quickly to pick up shots on the next two holes.
He dropped shots on the eighth and ninth to make the turn at one-under, with a bogey on the 11th and birdies on the 14th and 17th rounding out an eventful day.
