The 23-year-old's pace, ability to beat defenders and create havoc for the opposition will be a valuable asset for the Australians when they land in Canada next month.
She has been used off the bench in most of her 12 matches for the Matildas, an impact role she will again embrace in the group of death featuring the US, Sweden and Nigeria.
For all her highlights last season, nothing will eclipse the wonder goal Sykes scored against minor premiers Perth Glory in the final round.
With the scores tied at 1-1 and Canberra's season hanging in the balance, Sykes smashed a volley into the top left-hand corner of the net.
"I remember the ball coming over and it was one of those ones you don't think too much about," Sykes said.
"It would definitely put your name up in lights if you could do that at a World Cup.
"It's a dream come true and something I've worked for for a long time."
Sykes is one of three Canberra United players in the Matildas squad alongside goalkeeper Lydia Williams and striker Michelle Heyman.
Sykes made her international debut as a 16-year-old in 2008, but struggled when recalled to the national team at last year's Asian Cup.
However, her blistering form in the second half of last year's W-League season - culminating in Canberra United's second championship - catapulted Sykes back on the radar of Matildas coach Alen Stajic.
That culminated in Sykes earning selection for this year's tour of Europe.
"Getting another taste of international football at that sort of tournament at the Asian Cup was great," Sykes said.
"It really helped me believe that I belonged there, then play well in the W-League and into the World Cup squad now.
"I gained a lot more confidence playing for the national team because it can be quite nerve racking finally pulling on the Australian jersey."
The Matildas will go into camp on Saturday before playing Vietnam in Sydney on Tuesday and Thursday next week.
They start their World Cup campaign against the US on June 8.
Meanwhile, the Capital Football FFA Cup draw for the quarter-finals of qualifying will be held on Thursday.
White Eagles FC reached the last eight with a 3-0 win against Weston-Molonglo FC at the Hawker Football Centre on Tuesday night.
Gungahlin United, Monaro Panthers, Canberra Olympic, Tuggeranong United, ANU FC, Cooma Tigers FC and Belconnen United are the other teams trying to secure a place in the main draw.
