Vikings fullback Jesse Mogg was certain he had secured a famous victory for his side, but his 35-metre attempt from directly in front after the siren was waved away by the touch judge.

Vikings vice-captain Robbie Coleman claimed Mogg's kick snuck inside the right-hand upright, while Rays players were also stunned at the decision.

Replays from Fox Sports appear to show the ball narrowly squeezing inside the posts, however the height of the goal posts at Viking Park make it difficult to be certain.

After reviewing the footage, Roff said it was inconclusive whether Mogg's penalty was successful and that the referee's decision would stand.

"My understanding is there's no recourse for revising the referee's decision in that regard," Roff said.

"Unfortunately the cameras that broadcast the match didn't provide a good perspective of it, so we weren't able to from that respect.

"Like Robbie said after the game, it's a shame the posts weren't higher, but it's one of those we have to take on the chin and move forward."

Roff said the goal posts at Viking Park were "average height" and that the height of posts varied significantly among the different Super Rugby and Test grounds.

"I don't think there's been too many issues when Viking Park's been used for grand finals etc," Roff said.

"Moggy just hit it high and long and created the confusion at the end of the game."

The Vikings are still in finals contention for the National Rugby Championship with two games remaining, but they could drop out of the top four depending on results in this weekend's other games.

While the draw will be remembered for Mogg's contentious penalty goal, Vikings coach Dan McKellar said his side only had itself to blame after having two players sent to the sin-bin in the final 10 minutes.

"[Mogg] was pretty convinced it did go over, but we should have had the game wrapped up by then," McKellar said.

"Poor discipline meant we were down to 13 men in a crucial part of the game, the last 10 minutes.

"I thought the 13 players that were on were really gutsy and put us in a position to potentially win that game.

"It's not all on Jesse's shoulders."

In better news, McKellar said the ankle injury to captain Fotu Auelua wasn't as bad as first thought, and he could be a chance to face NSW Country next Saturday.

There was also the impressive performance of youngster Joe Powell at scrum-half and vice-captain Coleman in the No.10 jersey.

"Going off last night, Joe handled himself really well," McKellar said.

"He's a tough little bugger who gets stuck in, does his job and does it well and isn't afraid to mix it with the big boys.

"I thought Robbie was excellent.

"If we get better at holding possession, we've got to give guys like Robbie, Nigel Ah Wong and Jerome Niumata more ball, more often."
