Former WNBL star Jess Bibby and Canberra United co-captain Ellie Brush already knew each other.

Hannah Wallett and Ella Ross had spent plenty of time together in Canberra representative teams and even went to the same primary school.

Ross and Britt Tully were used to being on rival teams having played softball and football against each other since they were 12 years old.

But all five have come together to get acquainted with the Hume Highway on the drive to Sydney and back for training in the first AFLW season.

The schedule isn't the same every week, but they tend to drive up on a Monday, come back on a Wednesday, then do a day trip on the Thursday - up and back.

While the group have grown close the car trips are over, with the Giants hosting the Western Bulldogs in their final game of the year at Manuka Oval on Saturday night.

"It started really quiet and only asking the occasional question and it was sort of all small talk," Brush said.

"Then we sort of delved in deeper and there's a lot of banter that gets thrown around. We all just enjoy each other's company.

"It's been lucky that there's been no fights or we haven't had to drop anyone off at the side of the road to walk the rest of the way."

Why not skip the driving and just move into Condell Park in Sydney's west with the club's 10 other interstate recruits for a few months?

It would certainly save a few dollars in petrol money and ease the load on the odometers in the Popcars they've been using.

A few of them have to come back for work commitments, meaning cramming into a small car is simply a necessity.

Bibby runs her own coffee business, Shot Clock, and has been known to work from the car, while Brush comes back home for stints as a barista.

Wallett is a physiotherapist at Canberra Hospital and has been blessed with three months leave to play football, but she's not sure how she will feel about getting back to reality.

"It's been really fun, we just knuckle in and have a bit of a sing-along, have a bit of a debrief," Wallett said.

"It's nice to have a bit of a chat about footy in the confines of the car and then just chill out. Sometimes we have a bit of a snooze depending on how hard training was.

"I think it's just reality really. A lot of people are like 'How are you guys doing it?' But for us it's just normal. I don't think that at this stage we couldn't really manage it any other way."

In between all the deep and meaningful conversations and finding out what each person eats and drinks, belting out the chorus to Disney classics and Justin Beiber's "Sorry" takes centre stage.

But Brush has been left to rue the fact so much music has gone undiscovered.

"Bohemian Rhapsody got an amazing rendition just the other night," Brush laughed.

"We were actually a bit upset with ourselves that we got this far before we had that one. The harmonies were amazing."
