The FFA Centre of Excellence's 1-1 draw with Canberra FC means the academy side has no chance of catching Canberra Olympic at the top of the table.

League premiers Olympic are edging closer towards a second consecutive treble after leaving Tuggeranong United's finals hopes hanging by a thread.

Olympic wanted to make a statement after the week that was and turned the knife into Tuggeranong in a 4-0 win at O'Connor Enclosed Oval on Sunday.

Olympic have wrongly come under fire for Capital Football's decision to force the FFA COE to forfeit its clash against the reigning champions and coach Frank Cachia was proud of his side's response.

"Up until this week we were all asking, are we going to play this game or not? It comes down to Capital Football making a call on whether or not we do it and we follow the rules," Cachia said.

"Once it was announced, we didn't celebrate. We wanted to make sure our response was on the field and any premierships that we won or any games that we won were things that we were in control of and not something that was done in an office.

"Now the boys are a bit happier. I think we're sitting 10 points clear at the top of the table so it's good."

Tuggeranong's fate doesn't rest entirely in their own hands ahead of their must-win clash against the Monaro Panthers next week - they also need Canberra FC to knock over Gungahlin United.

Tuggeranong and Gungahlin sit fifth and sixth respectively, but whoever finishes higher will join Olympic, Canberra, and Belconnen United in the finals.

The second-placed FFA COE does not play finals as per its agreement with Capital Football but recent events have left a stain on the season.

Capital Football backflipped on an agreement to postpone an FFA COE game, forcing the team to forfeit its match against Canberra Olympic and with it any chance of a league title.

Olympic were crowned league champions for the second consecutive year during the week when Capital Football delivered the final nail in the coffin to the FFA COE's hopes.

But Olympic wanted to prove to the rest of the competition they deserve the premiership and they did it in emphatic fashion as Stephen Domenici and Josh Gulevski found the back of the net.

"Before the forfeit we were still six points clear at the top of the table and undefeated since round two," Cachia said.

"We wanted to respond to a few things that happened in the past week, the result against Gungahlin and also some of the things that have been said about the club and about us in the last week, so it was a good response."

Olympic will juggle their championship hopes with a clash against Northern NSW premiers Edgeworth FC in the National Premier Leagues finals in September.
