Buchanan returned to her former school St John Vianney's in Waramanga on Monday to promote the Kids TRYathlon and said it was one of those moments to cherish and remind herself she is a dual Olympian and multiple mountain bike and BMX world champion.

"To be able to give an Olympic jersey to one of the girls and to be able to give one to the school as a past student is nice," Buchanan said.

"It's pretty special to walk into the school and all of the kids know who I am, it's something for them to aspire to and know that they can be an Olympian one day as well."

Buchanan is again nominated for the Cycling Australia's highest honour, the Sir Hubert 'Oppy' Opperman Medal and Trophy as the Australian cyclist of the year.

She won the award in 2013 when she became the first Australian cyclist to claim two world titles in two different disciplines in the same season.

This season she achieved the same rare milestone but the ever modest Buchanan deflected her chances of again taking home the Oppy.

"I have a feeling Anna Meares will win, she's had an incredible season and won bronze at the Olympic Games as well," Buchanan said.

But it is unlikely she will go home empty-handed as she is also nominated in the people's choice category and mountain bike cyclist of the year.

Buchanan has had an opportunity to "decompress" in the last few weeks before heading over to the US for the final meet of the season in Oklahoma.

She said competing in the two disciplines was an advantage for her as she looked ahead to the 2020 Olympic Games.

"It keeps me fresh, it's helped with my longevity in the sport already and now going into my third Olympic cycle I will be 29 years old in Tokyo and I think that I will be peaking as a sprint athlete," Buchanan said.

"Being able to bounce back and forth between those two sports is a challenge but it has helped me to be an all-rounder on a bike and also stay mentally fresh."

Buchanan is also nominated for ACT female athlete of the year.
