But never has the 16th seed beaten the No. 1 - top seeds boast an all-time record of 132-0 in first-round NCAA tournament games - and true to form Kansas ran out 100-62 victors.
Canberra product Moneke has set the college basketball scene alight this season and narrowly missed his 15th double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds.
But Kansas closed out the first half on a 29-7 run on their way to the third biggest win in its 145-game NCAA tournament history.
It brings an end to UC Davis' dream March Madness run, the NCAA Division I basketball championship that pits the 68 best college teams against each other in a single elimination tournament.
