Athletics Australia published its schedule for the 2017-18 season on Thursday morning and left the ACT championships, from January 26-28, as the only event at the AIS.

But Athletics ACT chief executive Ben Offereins says discussions are underway to bring a one-off meet to Canberra to make up for the loss of the grand prix.

The grand prix has been moved to Brisbane because Australia's Commonwealth Games team goes into camp around the time of the meetings on March 22-24.

Offereins says "it makes sense" to send the grand prix tournament up north with the Commonwealth Games set to take place on the Gold Coast.

"We're still exploring the other options of having a one-off stand alone meet ourselves but we're just looking at where we might be able to fit that into the calendar," Offereins said.

"This year is obviously quite compact with everything that's going on. If we can find a free weekend and if we've got the resources to be able to man the event, we'll look at doing something too."

The former Olympian says Athletics ACT were keen to hold on to the grand prix but were willing to sacrifice the event for the good of Commonwealth Games preparation.

The grand prix is shaping up as a huge event on the athletics calendar with Australian and international stars set to use it as a launching pad for Commonwealth Games success.

Offereins says the biggest challenge lies in finding a weekend that works for all parties - but if they can do it, he expects the big names to flock to the AIS.

Some of Australian athletics' biggest names descended on Canberra for the grand prix earlier this year and Offereins is itching to provide them with another chance leading into the Commonwealth Games.
