Taylor and Rebecca Cross got the Games off to a perfect start on Saturday with a gold-medal double as the Canberra's 364 junior athletes take on the international competition.

It's the biggest Canberra contingent to compete in the event's 30 years and Taylor has been training since April to achieve her gold-medal goal.

But her three-second win in the 100 metres backstroke was only the start of a 10-race campaign.

Alfred Deakin High School student Taylor will also compete in the 200m individual medley, the 200m and 50m backstroke, the 50m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and four relays.

"I've got a lot of events, this is just the start. I've been training for this all year, but mainly since around April," Taylor said.

"This is my first time [at the Pacific School Games], I've always wanted to come but I've never been old enough.

"To get a medal on the first day, it's been pretty good. I'd like to go to a Youth Olympics and maybe an Olympics if I'm good enough [when I'm older]."

The Pacific School Games helped launch sprint queen Melissa Breen's career seven years ago as she blitzed the field to claim gold.

Canberra's strong representation will be hoping the bi-annual Games do the same for them as they strive for success against athletes from across Australia, India, China, Macau, Fiji and Pakistan.

The Opening Ceremony will be held on Sunday with the swimming events kick-starting the program,

Canberra finished the first day with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals, with Jacinta Essam, Kayla Hardy and Liam Brodrick earning spots on the podium.

The games will continue until November 29 with 4000 children competing across nine sports.
