Leerdam left the ground in an ambulance with his collapse sending shockwaves around the venue and French is keen to see if there is "something more we can do" at premier level.
Blows to the head have quickly become a far more serious issue in cricket following the death of Phillip Hughes in November 2014.
The South Australian batsman was fatally struck by a ball in a Sheffield Shield match that changed the cricketing landscape forever.
But Cricket Australia's concussion and head trauma policy does not extend to any level below elite cricket - encompassing Sheffield Shield, domestic one-day, Big Bash League, WNCL, WBBL, Futures League, and under age national championships matches.
"At premier cricket level it's really at the player's discretion," French said.
"Obviously the umpires have a duty of care to make sure everyone is okay but it falls back onto the player, if they're feeling unwell, to self-regulate.
"We fall into line with the rest of Australian cricket premier policies and procedures. We review those policies every year so we'll have a look at that one again this year and see if there's something more we can do.
"I think player safety and [concern about] head knocks is at an all-time high - not just in cricket but in all sports.
"Everyone is aware of the issue and is putting things in place to mitigate it, so we're no different to everyone."
French says the first class method, which utilises computerised pre-testing to provide a baseline for a player's health and further testing after they are struck, is near impossible to implement in local cricket.
The costs would not be viable at local level which puts extra onus on individual players to be smart about their wellbeing.
Leerdam said he was "in all sorts" when he was rushed off in an ambulance after collapsing with a concussion midway through the second innings of ANU's defeat to Weston Creek Molonglo.
The delayed onset concussion came hours after he was struck on the head by a Harry Medhurst delivery early in his innings when he was still on zero.
Leerdam batted on for almost 50 overs for a remarkable 98 from 158 balls but didn't last long in the field before he was taken to hospital.
The 18-year-old spent about 90 minutes in hospital before being discharged, and he was left to nurse a mild headache on Monday.
"I was there so I watched most of his innings. He felt pretty good while he was batting and at the drinks break he felt really unwell. It's an interesting one, the delayed onset concussion, it's hard," French said.
"I know Dan changed his helmet straight away. Helmets get hit now and they get changed over straight away whereas in the past they might have kept using the same helmet.
"Players are more aware of concussion than ever before. If anyone ever feels unwell after a head knock in sport it's important to rest."
Concussions on the local scene are certainly not unheard of, with ACT/NSW Country Comets batsman Blake Macdonald being struck in the helmet while fielding at short leg for Wests-UC during the 2016-17 season.
Macdonald sat the rest of the day out and missed two Twenty20 games for the ACT Comets the following day as a precaution.
