Cricket ACT chief executive Cameron French said Cricket Australia was looking to add one extra game per team in season 2017-18, boosting the summer of cricket's already jam-packed schedule.

Cricket Australia has indicated a desire to host games in regional areas with the likes of Canberra, Geelong and the Gold Coast under consideration should the tournament be extended.

Manuka Oval looms as a likely destination for a Sydney Thunder game given Canberra is in the 'Thunder region' — all of New South Wales and the ACT is split into Thunder and Sydney Sixers regions.

"There has been discussion over at Cricket Australia that they'd like to take some Big Bash games to regional locations," French said.

"If they were to do that we'd love to have the Thunder come down and come and play some games at Manuka Oval.

"Obviously we've got a natural fit with the Thunder given their catchment."

French said the discussions went beyond just hosting Canberra's second BBL game, with ambitions to host a double-header featuring the men's and women's teams at Manuka Oval.

Cricket ACT expected a decision on the matter wouldn't be made until mid-2017, as the finer details of the home summer's schedule are ironed out.

"In the Canberra community I think every time there's been cricket on people have turned up in droves," French said.

"I think it's just another example of Manuka Oval being a really wonderful boutique cricket ground that can host anything from PM's XI games all the way through to Test matches."

It remained unclear whether Saturday's ACT election would have a bearing on the outcome in regards to government funding.

French said ultimately the decision to play in Canberra would be spearheaded by Cricket ACT's partnership with the Sydney Thunder and assisted by the support of the local government.

Meanwhile, French said Cricket ACT would have no problems facilitating a pink ball Test match at Manuka Oval given the venue hosted the Prime Minister's XI with the pink Kookaburra last season.

It comes as the day-night Test format continued to grow and spread around the cricketing landscape.

The upcoming Test series opener between Pakistan and the West Indies will be played with the Kookaburra pink ball in Dubai.

Recently the England and Wales Cricket Board threw a hand up in support of the concept, agreeing to host a day-night Test against the West Indies at Edgbaston next August.

But again the decision to play a day-night Test at Manuka Oval would hinge on Cricket Australia's schedule with regards to how many pink ball Test matches would be played over the home summer.

"What we do know is that the players consider the Manuka lights the best in Australia," French said.

"If there was a move to play a day-night Test we'd certainly be able to accommodate it with the quality of the stadia we have."
