North Canberra-Gungahlin's Papua New Guinean Kila got his side off to a rollicking start as he pounded 82 from 101 balls against Queanbeyan at Freebody Oval on Saturday.

Kila combined with young gun Ben Taylor (77) to guide Norths to 9-334 (declared) with the hosts 0-6 in reply.

Norths captain Louis Rutzou says the PNG import only knows one way – see the ball, hit the ball.

"There's no two-day cricket approach to his game, it's all attack so it's very good to watch," Rutzou said.

"We got off to a good start as it was, but he came in at 1-30 and really capitalised on our openers seeing off the new ball and then lifting the scoring rate into four and five an over in the first session, which was really impressive."

Kila keeps things simple whether he's on or off the paddock and Rutzou says it is having a profound impact on the playing group.

"He's just a real relaxed character and I think it rubs off on all the individuals," Rutzou said.

"They don't seem to take it too seriously. At the end of the day it's just cricket and he's putting it in perspective I guess.

"Obviously you have plenty of bad days as a cricketer. There's no point taking it as life or death and his attitude is very much that some days he'll make runs, some days he won't make runs. But the days that he makes runs, he really enjoys it."

Rutzou says Taylor's knock is a sign of the maturity he has developed in recent years as part of Cricket ACT's high-performance programs.

Taylor now knows "he's not just an 18-year-old kid, he's a Comets player".

"He came out to bat in the innings when it could have gone one of two ways," Rutzou said. "We could have powered through which we did or we could have fallen in a heap which we've done in the past few weeks."

Meanwhile, Wests-UC's Nick Ada ripped through Ginninderra's top order with 3-17 (9) as the Tigers were bowled out for 208.

Ginninderra's Cameron Suidgeest did his best to repair the damage as he picked up the wickets of Wests-UC opener Matthew Gilkes and first-drop Tom Engelbrecht for noughts to have the Lions at 4-96 at stumps.

Tuggeranong struggled to overcome a shaky start after losing two wickets for no runs on their way to being rolled for 160 as Eastlake bowler Anthony Meere (4-17 off 11.3) did the damage with ball in hand.

Solid contributions from Eastlake opener Adam Tett (44) and skipper Michael Spaseski (26*) has the visitors on track for first innings points as they sit at 3-102 leading into day two.

Across town the Owls posted 263 at ANU North Oval against Weston Creek Molonglo, who are 1-48 in reply.

Half-centuries to ANU's Scott Murn (72) and Josh Hogan (50) were vital for the hosts against the competition heavyweights.
