But Eastlake captain Michael Spaseski believes his side has learnt from the experience and is better equipped to contend for silverware this time.
Eastlake will host Ginninderra in the opening round of the Douglas Cup on Saturday before welcoming Queanbeyan to Kingston Oval for the semi-finals of the Gallop Cup on Sunday.
They finished on top of the table in the 50-over format to carry over their form from a year ago when they set the benchmark in both competitions.
However, they lost both of their semi-finals to miss out on an opportunity to claim a premiership.
Spaseski said it was imperative Eastlake made a statement in their opening game of the two-day competition.
"In round one you're looking to get right on top and it's a lot easier to stay on top than gain points later on," Spaseski said.
"We've got a couple batsmen in the top order, Tom Henry and Paul O'Malveny, who at the moment are hitting the ball really well.
"If they can do their stuff and a couple people can bat around them during the day, we can easily pile on 300. And in Canberra grade cricket, 300 is a very competitive score."
Spaseski said he enjoyed the change of schedule this season to have the three different formats of the game held at separate times.
"Definitely prefer how it is this year," Spaseski said.
"Last year was mix and match, so you'd be getting ready for a two-dayer and you'd have a Twenty20 week.
"It's really hard changing formats so quickly, so it's a much better way of running things."
Spaseski is aiming to get among the runs once again after scoring an unbeaten 145 for the ACT Comets in their Futures League victory against Victoria this week in Melbourne.
"You don't get these purple patches very often, but when you do, it's about making them count," he said.
