Former Socceroo Andy Bernal makes winning start with Canberra FC

Canberra FC made a winning start under former Socceroo Andy Bernal with a 3-1 victory against Tuggeranong United at Kambah on Saturday.

In its first game since coach Ray Junna's dismissal, Canberra FC secured all three points on the back of a double from Adam Spaleta and impressive National Premier League debuts from a trio of teenagers.

Bernal injected Alex Tilley, 17, and Ben van Meurs, 16, into the starting line-up while bringing 15-year-old Daniel Subasic on in the second half.

All three had played a crucial role during the week in Canberra FC winning the under-18 division at the Kanga Cup.

Canberra FC is third on the table and only three points behind leaders Belconnen United, interim coach Bernal believing they can secure a piece of silverware out of this season.

"I still think we're running on 75 per cent of our potential and there's a lot of improvement to be had, but we'll get there,'' Bernal said.

"I'm really happy today because the boys embraced how we wanted to play and we wanted to apply ourselves to the task.

"We might need other results to go our way [to win the league], but I'm a winner, I would never give up.''

Spaleta's brace and a strike from prolific goal-scorer Alex Oloriegbe gave Canberra FC a commanding 3-0 lead at half-time before Daniel Colbertaldo put Tuggeranong on the board in the 81st minute.

"Games away at Tuggeranong can be tricky especially when you're used to playing on a nice carpet at Deakin Stadium every weekend,'' Bernal said.

"It can be a tricky game for many reasons, the pitch and the size of the pitch, it's a tough place to go.

"If you're not prepared to match them physically, then you're up against it.''

CANBERRA NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUE: Canberra FC 3 (Adam Spaleta 23', 42', Alex Oloriegbe 32') bt Tuggeranong United 1 (Daniel Colbertaldo 81') at Kambah on Saturday.
