Greater Western Sydney get frosty NEAFL reception from Queanbeyan

Greater Western Sydney's reserves were unimpressed with the frosty reception they got at Queanbeyan on Saturday morning.

But it wasn't enough to stop them from beating the Tigers in a competitive 37-point loss to the NEAFL's best side at Dairy Farmers Park.

Tigers co-coach Josh Bryce said they had the better of the first half of quarters, but couldn't match it with the Giants in the back end of terms.

Darcy Spinks kicked four goals on debut for Queanbeyan, while Hawthorn premiership full-back Stephen Gilham kicked six for GWS.

"When we rocked up we saw the Giants players come in and their faces when they saw the ground, it was pretty funny," Bryce said. "It was a pretty good frost this morning and we were out there kicking it off."

It's been a tumultuous week for the Tigers, with the board deciding to withdraw from next season's NEAFL despite only being one year into a three-year contract.

But Bryce said knowing the Tigers only had a few games left in the second-tier competition allowed them to focus on simply enjoying their footy.

It threatened to be a blowout against the top side, but the Tigers pushed the Giants all day.

"We originally started playing footy because we love the game, so we went back to that," Bryce said.

"We've had some hard times this year and the last week has been pretty hard, but when we got out on the ground we were there because we love it.

"We just went out there saying let's have fun, let's have a crack."

Toby Conroy returned for his first game in more than a month after suffering his second concussion this season and he was straight back to his usual prolific best.

Bryce's co-coach Kade Klemke continued his top season, despite getting "belted about five times".

The round wraps up on Sunday with Belconnen hosting Sydney Hills Eagles at Kippax at 12pm, while Ainslie and Eastlake go head-to-head at Alan Ray Oval at 2pm.
