Nathan Hart, Daniel Rickard, and Jackson Williams claimed the bronze medal in the team sprint at the Cycling Australia track nationals in Brisbane on Thursday.

Hart was riding second wheel for the first time, and the race also provided a big challenge for masters rider Rickard and former rugby player Williams.

"Actually the first time we rode the team sprint was yesterday," Hart said.

"I did a training effort with Dan only the day before racing. I live in Adelaide, and Dan and Jackson live in Canberra.

"That was the first time we rode together. Considering that, we rode alright."

Rio Olympian Patrick Constable combined with Matt Glaetzer and Ben Scholl to lead South Australia to a second consecutive gold medal in 44.537 seconds.

The trio ousted Victoria's Jacob Schmid, Braeden Dean and Conor Rowley, who finished just over one tenth of a second slower.

Hart admitted the ACT were "a fair way off the pace" but says matching some of the world's best was always going to be a tough ask for a trio lacking preparation.

"Dan's the oldest guy in the ACT team - he's also a masters world champion in the sprint a few years ago," Hart said.

"He's quite quick as well, not even considering his age. He's pretty sharp at first wheel. He's been riding for the last five years or so.

"Jackson's originally from rugby and has been riding for the last two years or so. Big fella, pretty strong. He's in ACTAS at the moment, and he spends a lot of time in Sydney training with NSW Institute of Sport."

Hart says the bronze medal was somewhat of a hollow feeling with only three teams competing and has called for more teams to put their hands up for the national championships.

Saturday kicks off the remainder of the sprint competitions, before Hart returns to Adelaide to prepare for the track cycling world championships in Hong Kong.
