Kyrgios has been advised to step away from tennis as the world No. 25 manages his latest injury setback which compounds three months worth of niggling elbow issues.

The French Open begins in less than six weeks but the 22-year-old took to Instagram to say he will work around the clock to regain the strength "needed to compete at my best".

"After returning home and consulting with medical staff in Australia I have been diagnosed with Posterior Impingement and Ulnar Nerve Irritation and I have been advised to stop playing through it," Kyrgios wrote.

"After thorough investigations and careful consideration I have had a corticosteroid injection to settle the pain and inflammation.

"Now to maximise my recovery I have to build the strength needed to compete at my best over the next month, ensuring I have confidence in my elbow before returning."

Kyrgios has never made it out of the third round at the French Open and he has a trio of clay court events - Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome - on the horizon as he looks to better that record.

Playing all three ATP World Tour Masters events looms as a tall order for Kyrgios given he has already withdrawn from tournaments in America and Europe since the injury flared up.

Kyrgios was hampered by his troublesome elbow in his last outing on clay - a straight sets defeat at the hands of veteran Ivo Karlovic at the US men's clay court championship in Houston earlier this month.

The Canberra product was slated to play in Rotterdam and gave himself as much time as possible to regain full fitness before taking to social media to announce his withdrawal.

The injury stunted Kyrgios' serving power and ultimately derailed Australia's Davis Cup hopes in February.
