With a population of 550, about 300 turn up to the showground to watch their local heroes vie for the George Tooke Shield in the green and gold.
Post match it's back to The Telegraph Hotel for a beer — it's the only pub in town.
It was at the Telegraph Hotel the club got back on its feet after a previous attempts to revive the Gunning Roos fell through.
Everyone is welcome to celebrate a win — and there were plenty of them this year as the Roos bounded their way to a preliminary final — or to commiserate a loss.
Because in Gunning it doesn't matter whether you're selling raffle tickets, a sponsor, a strapper or just a fan. Everyone in town is part of the Roos.
That's why winning the NRL's Grassroots Club of the Year gong is so important to club president Ian Blackburn.
"Without them, there's no us — it's that simple," Blackburn said.
"Everyone knows each other by name and it's a very strong rugby league community. The club's been going on for 80-odd years, but there's been a 15-year hiatus where the club wasn't going.
"We got it together last November and have gone from there."
The Roos have managed to win three awards since the club's rebirth, but it is much more than a story of knockabout country characters getting a team together again.
Gunning's community fundraising efforts have seen the Roos clinch awards for their region's club of the year, NSW Country Rugby League's club of the year, and now the NRL's Grassroots Club of the Year.
"We've had a beyondblue fundraiser because youth male is suicide is very high out here, and it devastates a small community," Blackburn said.
"There was a particular club from another small town [Boorowa] not far from here that also lost a lot of young blokes one year, so we picked that round to have a beyondblue fundraiser, and we raised about $14,500 for beyondblue.
"Our girls also did a cancer bash for women's ovarian cancer and breast cancer and raised funds for that as well. It's just about giving back to the community."
Walk past the Gunning Showground today and the grass is up to your knees, and the posts have been taken down.
Though the Roos aren't a one-hit wonder. They'll be back — it's just because the club shares the ground with community horse groups.
