Berry hosted athletes, administrators, media and students at Canberra Stadium this week to start discussions about ways to get women and girls physically active.

The idea was triggered by former Canberra Capitals and Australian Opals coach Carrie Graf's WNBL farewell speech, in which she detailed how she was told she couldn't play cricket at school because she was a girl.

Berry wants to ensure all women and girls have the same opportunities and pathways and males, opening the door for greater collaboration in Canberra's growing female athlete ranks.

Some of Canberra's best Olympic Games medal hopes are women, led by Hockeyroo Anna Flanagan, Australian sevens skipper Sharni Williams, BMX star Caroline Buchanan, swimmer Alicia Coutts and AIS-based boxer Shelley Watts, while Lauren Wells, Edwina Bone, Emily Smith, Kellie White, Kelsey-Lee Roberts, Michelle Heyman, Lydia Williams and Melissa Breen are all set for Australian duties.

"It's about having a conversation in the sector and in a broad range of sectors," Berry said.

"What is that people want to see change and how can we do it together? Do we start at the boardroom level of male dominated sports or do we start at the grassroots level?

"I listened to Graffy's story of growing up and experiences as a young girl ... that wasn't OK. I don't want my daughter to have this battle, we need change for our children so they've got an equal chance.

"There's momentum, we need to keep it going and to make it even better. We want a strong community in the ACT that is inclusive of everyone, this is a way we can identify the barriers for young women in sport and we can break them down.

"Yes there's a role for government. But I want to see what role there is within our sports."

Berry asked students from Gungahlin College and Canberra Girls Grammar to attend the round-table discussion, while Raiders new board member Bronwyn Fagan was also there.

Canberra boasts national teams in soccer, basketball and cricket and each team is pushing into schools to give girls role models to follow into sport if they choose.

Both the ACT Brumbies and the Raiders have two female board members as directors of the clubs.

One task Berry set the discussion group was to help devise a vision for creating an inclusive environment.

Australian women's rugby hooker and ACT captain Louise Burrows said the forum was a crucial step in getting women and girls excited about sport.

"It's really important for women to feel like they have a voice in sport, voices as a player, a volunteer or an administrator," Burrows said.

"Without opportunities like this, women don't feel like they're included. Being able to tap into different sporting groups, it opens the doors and lets everyone see different perspectives to come together and grow.

"Sometimes girls don't know how sport can help them physically, emotionally and mentally until they start. We might get girls come and play rugby and she might not be skilled, but she brings her friends and it spreads.

"That's how [Australian sevens captain] Sharni started ... she fell in love with rugby."
