Several nice browns and a brook trout were caught on trolled green Tasmanian Devils near Kalkite and a large brown was caught on a Celta cast from the bank.

Two anglers who had had six fishless trips to the lake in recent months went back for one more try, fishing near Hatchery Bay with scrub worms and mudeyes for two afternoon and evening sessions. They landed 19 fish - six rainbows and 13 browns - all of good size. All were in good condition, suggesting they had been eating regularly and were crammed full of yabbies.

Fishing in Eucumbene is still slow but there are some encouraging signs. A four-kilogram brown was caught on bait at Buckenderra. Some nice fish were seen rising in the bays opposite Buckenderra and fly fishers will concentrate on that area in the next few days.

Plenty of dragonflies were moving in the area and occasional dark caddis were seen hatching. Small dark nymphs and dark Woolly Buggers could be worth a try.

Cod deaths cease

Murray cod deaths in Lake Yerrabi and Lake Gungahlin have ceased, following rain. There's no accurate count on the death toll, but anglers are speculating that there may be only a few left in the lakes.

Most of the fish which died were large, with some thought to be from the original stocking about 15 years ago. It's thought the deaths were due to deoxygenation of the water by aquatic plants and algae. There's no solution yet, but one option might be solar-powered aerators similar to the units being trialled in Lake Burley Griffin.

In the local lakes, some nice-sized golden perch have been caught in Ginninderra, Burley Griffin and Tuggeranong, mostly on yabbies and scrub worms.

In Ginninderra the fish have been small, around 35-40 centimetres, but others to 55 centimetres have been caught in Burley Griffin and Tuggeranong. Redfin are still quiet and carp are busy spawning. Murray cod season is closed until December 1 and any fish caught accidentally must be returned to the water immediately.

Bank action at Burrinjuck

Nearly all the action with golden perch at Burrinjuck is along the shoreline as fish move into the shallows in search of food being flooded from the soil by the rising water. The lake is now 79 per cent full.

Best baits have been scrub worms, yabbies and shrimps. One angler landed 20 fish in a week's fishing in the Goodradigbee Arm, mostly on yabbies and shrimps, but took the largest fish, 61 centimetres, on a scrubby. Fish also have been taken on bibless minnows.

Snapper run continues

At the coast, the snapper appear to have moved from inshore locations back to the deeper water. Plenty of fish have been found in 55-75 metres of water off Batemans Bay and south all the way to Merimbula. Most of the fish are around two to three kilograms and have been taken on bait and especially soft plastics.

Some nice fish also have shown in patches off the Shoalhaven coast where the fish are a bit larger. One boat landed a seven-kilogram fish last weekend. They have been taken on bait and soft plastics but also on fluttering metal jigs fitted with flashy synthetic material.

Sand flathead also are showing in 35-45 metres of water right along the coast and can be taken on quick drops and moves to beat the leatherjackets. Tiger flathead are more common in deeper water, around 70-75 metres, where leatherjackets are less of problem.
