The WNBL's free agency window has opened and the Capitals have just one player contracted for the 2018-19 season in Lauren Scherf.

Small forward Keely Froling has made no secret of her desire to stay with the Capitals and now Gaze could do the same after joining the Canberra Capitals Academy in the SEABL.

But the Capitals aren't expecting to make many major announcements for some time as the club settles on a budget for the upcoming season, while coach Paul Goriss is currently overseas for an Australian Opals training camp.

Gaze is currently plying her trade with Wuerzburg in Germany but will return to Canberra before their SEABL season tips off on April 13 against Diamond Valley - a side featuring Capitals stars Scherf, Abbey Wehrung and Eziyoda Magbegor.

"I've moved around so much with basketball and it has been such an unbelievable ride so far and I hope it continues that way," Gaze said.

"But I think staying in Canberra for the WNBL off season will provide somewhat of a home base and a city where I can feel at home and comfortable in. I have family here so it makes a huge difference.

"Being familiar with Canberra and sticking to similar routines I had during WNBL will hopefully help me on the court this season with the Caps Academy."

The 27-year-old laughs she doesn't like admitting she is a veteran but she has "no choice" when looking at the raft of young talent coming through the Capitals Academy squad.

It is, however, a squad that has never played in the finals - a stat former WNBL champion Gaze is desperate to change.

"I think when you bring in players who have been on championship winning teams or winning teams in general, the level of competitiveness naturally increases," Gaze said.

"I'm a very competitive person and I know first hand that Keely Froling is too, so hopefully together we can lead by example and help build a competitive culture."
