Breen suffers 'freak' injury

January 30, 2012

Melissa Breen suffered a ''freak'' injury scare at the Adelaide Track Classic on Saturday night but the 2010 national 100m champion is confident the setback will not disrupt her season.

Sally Pearson won the 100m race but Breen could only jog down the straight after suffering a back spasm while on the blocks ready to start.

''It was very sudden, I haven't had any problems like that before,'' Breen said.

''It was just a freak occurrence. I can't explain it, it is done now I haven't injured any part of my body which is great.''

After receiving treatment on her lower back the 21-year-old is already back to light training in the lead up to two events in Perth in the next fortnight.

''It has pulled up quite good ... and I have been able to jog [yesterday] so it is not an injury as such. It was a weird sensation and I was pretty stressed about it when it happened ... but it won't put a dampener on anything.''

In results for other ACT athletes, Kerrie Perkins won the long jump event with a leap of 6.57m with Jessica Penney in fourth place. Zoe Buckman was third in the 800m and Emily Brichacek was fourth in the 5000m.
