Kyrgios will play little-known world No.57 Federico Delbonis in the opening round of the tournament in Melbourne.

But more pressing is the potential of taking on the man he grew up idolising - 17-time grand slam winner Federer - in the fourth round looms as the biggest match of his career.

Kyrgios has spent the past three days in intense training to blow out any cobwebs and test his troublesome back to ensure it can stand the rigours of the first grand slam of the year.

Coach Todd Larkham is confident the 19-year-old has shown he's ready to perform on the big stage, but Federer would not be a part of his plans just yet.

"Nick's got a lot of respect for every guy in the draw, he's going to have to play well to win round one," Larkham said. "Nick just wanted to know who he was playing in round one and that was it. He doesn't like to look ahead.

"Everything out of that first match doesn't matter, he's played in a few slams now and he's had a bit of experience. He knows that's the best approach, one match at a time and then regroup."

Kyrgios' Australian Open campaign was clouded after his round-one loss at the Sydney International this week.

It was his first tournament in four months and he was troubled by a back problem that also ruled him out of the Hopman Cup.

But long and hard practice sessions have erased any fears that the rising star is ready to play next week and continue his rise up the rankings.

Kyrgios was once too shy to share the same change rooms as former world No.1 Federer.

But now comfortable with his standing and having trained with Federer for a week last year, Kyrgios would relish the challenge of taking on the world's best, Todd Woodbridge said.

"I think he'd love it, he's the sort of kid who would and they're the matches you dream of," Woodbridge said.

"You didn't see him back away against [Rafael] Nadal at Wimbledon, and he wouldn't back away from an opportunity to play Federer if it comes about."

Argentinian Delbonis, 24, made the second round at the US Open last year but failed to make it beyond the opening round of the other three tournaments.

Kyrgios shot to fame at the Australian Open last year after starting the tournament ranked 183 in the world.

His Twitter follower count went from 4000 to 14,000 overnight and his website crashed when 250,000 visitors logged on after his second-round loss to Frenchman Benoit Paire.

Since then he has beaten then world No.1 Nadal at Wimbledon and won worldwide fame despite his limited time on the court.

It means there's more pressure and scrutiny on his Australian Open campaign this year as he juggles off-court duties with his ambition to break Australia's home grand slam drought.

"But Nick isn't feeling it ... he's had three really tough training days now so he's got some more work in his legs to achieve what we wanted to," Larkham said.

"He's just been going about his business ... there's no pressure walking around the gym or the practice courts, so it hasn't been too bad."

Kyrgios picked up valuable experience playing alongside Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter in the Davis Cup and the International Premier Tennis League.

Larkham said there were no plans to call Hewitt, Rafter or Mark Philippoussis into camp to help talk him through the pressure of playing at a home grand slam.

"He's doing pretty well in that area in general right now, so the build-up is going how we thought and hoped," Larkham said.

Coaching legend Nick Bollettieri said: "I would suggest to him [Kyrgios] don't read the papers, don't read the press - just go out there. He's a big dude, he's got all the tools and now he's got to go out and prove that he can really be one heck of a player."
