But on Friday, it was explosive shooting guard Dejan Vasiljevic who showed why US colleges are clamouring for his signature.
Vasiljevic took Lake Ginninderra all the way with a spectacular 45-point performance in the championship game in his team's 90-75 win against Ignatius Park College at the Tuggeranong Southern Cross Stadium.
The Australian under-19 representative was deadly from long range with eight from 16 beyond the three-point arc among a busy 18-40 from the field to go with 14 rebounds.
His scoring burst would have been widely appreciated in the US where he will visit division one college programs at Miami, Stanford and Texas in January.
"I'm pretty speechless at the moment," Vasiljevic said.
"To give back to the school is pretty special.
"They pushed us hard, but we kept vocal and knew what we had to do."
Vasiljevic, his Centre of Excellence teammate Jack White (24 points, 10 rebounds) and Canberra junior Bul Kuol (20 points and 17 rebounds) scored all but one of Lake Ginninderra's points between them.
Ignatius Park led 44-40 at half-time before Lake Ginninderra turned it around with a 31-16 run in the third quarter.
"That's the championship quarter everyone talks about," Vasiljevic said.
"If we can come over the line there, we'll definitely win the championship, which we did."
Ignatius Park star William McDowell-White amassed 21 rebounds, but was kept to just 14 points on 5-13 shooting.
"Jack White did a phenomenal job on him," Vasiljevic said.
"Will's a great player and he will bounce back and prove he's one of the best there is."
Vasiljevic met with Stanford's assistant coach on Thursday night.
"It means a lot for him to come over and watch me play," he said.
"The other two coaches [from Texas and Miami] have been in contact with me and seeing how I'm going and they're really impressed with how I'm going.
"Going to the US in January will be a good experience, not just for me, but for my family to see how it will impact them as well."
It was Lake Ginninderra's sixth title in the school's 25th year of representing the ACT at the schools championships.
