Tolo is enjoying an all-star season with the Capitals, leading the team to the cusp of the finals and being named in the team of the week on Tuesday for the sixth time this year.

But the marquee centre has set her sights on another stint in Europe as she aims to make the most of her career while she's still young.

The 27-year-old will bypass a season with the Los Angeles Sparks in the WNBA to give her body time to refresh before playing in Europe.

Tolo has previously had stints with Pays d'Aix Basket and Bourges but returned to the Capitals after a knee reconstruction.

She is yet to finalise a European contract but has told Capitals coach Paul Goriss of her decision.

Her impending departure is a blow for the Capitals, who are already bracing for the retirement of Tolo's co-captain Carly Wilson at the end of the season.

But Tolo is confident she is leaving the club in a good position and wants to charge into the play-offs before she takes on a new challenge.

"To be honest, I think I'm going to go to Europe while I'm young and I want to have a crack, get some more experience because it's such a tough competition," Tolo said.

"I want to grow even further. Hopefully I can get a couple of more years over there but then I want to come back and settle at home, there's no place like Australia.

"I knew once I came back to the Capitals it would be hard to leave again, especially because I've taken on a leadership role.

"I feel like I'm leaving the team hanging a little bit. But it's about developing myself further to help the team in the future."

Tolo has been an inspirational leader this year, scoring an average of 18.53 points per game and missing only a handful of minutes. She has also made 50 blocks and grabbed 165 rebounds.

The Rio Olympian joined the Capitals as an AIS graduate in 2008 to play a back-up role behind Abby Bishop and Lauren Jackson in back to back WNBL championships.

But she has developed into the team's No. 1 target and she says her mission in Canberra won't be complete until the Capitals chase a drought-breaking play-off berth.

Canberra hasn't made the finals since 2011 and needs to win four of its remaining five games to earn a top-four berth.

The Capitals face a double road trip test against the Adelaide Lightning on Friday night and the Perth Lynx on Sunday.

"Having consistency is our biggest challenge at the moment and part of that is taking care of business when we need to," Tolo said.

"There are so many teams in the same position as us so it really is important for us to get the wins, but we know we're good enough if we put four quarters together."
