WNBL officials stuck their heads in the sand on Thursday and refused to comment on the controversial buzzer beater, a double-dribble, carry and travel, and an unsportsmanlike foul on Leilani Mitchell which ultimately saw the Adelaide Lightning level the series.

League boss Sally Phillips did not comment after the league issued a statement as the fallout continues, with the WNBL grand final series now bound for a decider at the AIS Arena on Saturday.

The season finale will be played in front of a passionate Canberra crowd with more than 3600 tickets already sold for the 4617-capacity arena.

Both Phillips and Basketball Australia officials manager Peter Carey declined to comment, while BA's head of officials Michael Haynes missed the game as he was in the United States for meetings with NBA officials.

Haynes did see footage of Nicole Seekamp's buzzer beater, with replays suggesting the Adelaide star was still touching the ball when the backboard lit up, but he says he is not in a position to comment.

Capitals coach Paul Goriss maintains one glance at that footage will make everyone "see the truth" about the game-winning shot, however another angle shows the backboard at the opposite end of the court perhaps hadn't lit up before Seekamp got the shot off.

The basket - legal or not - was a cruel blow for the Capitals given referees Jason Kelly, Vanessa Devlin and Craig Copes overlooked Lauren Nicholson's travel before she found Seekamp to send the series to a decider.

It is unclear if the refereeing trio will retain their places for game three, while a WNBL statement says "the league does not have the capacity to implement an instant replay system" but Goriss is frank when questioned if he would like to see one brought in.

"Yes I would," Goriss said.

"It’s in most other leagues around the world, we’re a professional league just like any other league. Let’s make the players and the game decide, rather than outside people deciding what happens.

"We’ve got our backs up about this, the girls are still hungry, the girls are still willing to fight and win and bring it back home to Canberra. Playing at home will be a different story."

Goriss has clashed with league officials over inconsistencies throughout the season with the club being slapped with a $1500 fine with a further $1000 suspended in December after he voiced "inflammatory" comments.

Phillips is determined to shut down public criticism of match officials but the league statement did not delve into whether the calls were correct.

"In relation to the final shot of the game, through the current broadcast technology the league does not have the capacity to implement an Instant Replay System (IRS) and has not for the past two seasons," the statement read.

"Therefore, the call on the night stands."

The statement raises more questions than answers as speculation mounts about whether calls in the dying stages were correct.

"There’s positives and negatives in [a review system], it tends to slow down the game a bit. For crucial games like this… it’s worth considering, definitely," Capitals star Marianna Tolo said.

"The refs have a tough job and they’re not going to see everything. It’s been like that and it’s always going to be like that. Someone is always not going to be happy, we’ve just got to deal with that and move on, and get ready for the next game."

Match officials themselves have grown frustrated over a percieved lack of feedback from the powers above, with concerns mounting about whether dishing out fines will deliver any positive outcomes in the long run.
