With star centre Lauren Jackson sidelined for another month and US import Renee Montgomery having issues with obtaining a visa, they have now lost former Australian Opals guard Hanna Zavecz, who has retired after a wretched run of injuries.

Zavecz re-injured a tear in the intercostal muscle in her rib in last week's game against the SEQ Stars at the AIS Arena last Thursday.

Facing the prospect of missing three to four weeks, the 30-year-old instead decided to call time on her stellar basketball career.

"After constant injury struggles over the past few seasons, I've decided to part ways with the Capitals and finish up my basketball career," Zavecz said.

"It's not a decision I've made lightly and if I felt there was another option, I would take it.

"I don't want to leave the team at all, particularly during this tough time, but I had to step back, take the emotion out of it, and figure out what is best for my health and for the club in moving forward.

"I couldn't be more thankful for the Canberra Capitals' coaches, staff and players and I will continue to follow the team throughout the rest of the season."

The Capitals have lost their first five games of the season before Saturday night's home game against the Melbourne Boomers.

Zavecz was in her second season with the Capitals.

She suffered a knee injury at the start of last season before broke a bone in her ankle and needed an ankle reconstruction in the off-season.

Capitals coach Carrie Graf said it was disappointing to see how injuries had curtailed Zavecz's impact in Canberra.

"She showed some great signs for us last season, she had a lot to offer and we saw her as a key 30-minute a game player," Graf said.

"She was deep in the Opals squad and was down to the last 14 going into the London Olympics.

"She was a super athlete, but has just had a bad 12, 18 months with injury."

Graf said the Capitals wouldn't be replacing Zavecz's spot on the roster.

"We'll just buckle down with what we've got at the moment," Graf said.

"If there was a player out there of that calibre, we probably would have looked to have signed them in the off-season.

"We'll focus on the group we've got for Melbourne on Saturday."
