It's a big statement from the San Antonio Stars guard after she won the Colonial Athletic Association's college Player of the Year award earlier this year.

The Capitals will announce Gwathmey as a recruit on Thursday morning as coach Paul Goriss continues to piece together his new look Canberra line-up.

Gwathmey will combine with Mikaela Ruef and Lauren Mansfield as a trio to help guide the Capitals out of the WNBL finals wilderness.

Gwathmey made a habit of breaking records in her college career at James Madison University and leapt at the chance to ply her trade down under.

"It's my first overseas experience," Gwathmey said.

"I wasn't being too picky. I think [Canberra] were the first team to really send an offer and I just took it. I wasn't being too picky."

With the Stars looking likely to miss the WNBA playoffs, the 23-year-old will make her way down under on September 26 for what she sees as a great development opportunity.

"It's a learning process just like the transition from high school to college," Gwathmey said.

"From college to where I am now, it's a lot of sitting back and learning from the veterans, and just waiting my turn. When that time does happen, I've got to make sure I'm getting the best out of the minutes that I'm getting."

Gwathmey admits she doesn't know a whole lot about the WNBL, but is excited to learn and prove herself as an "all-round player".

"I run the floor well, I play defence, I score," Gwathmey said.

"I have good range, I can shoot the three. Defensively I can guard. I'm tall enough to guard mismatches on defence."

The Capitals begin their season on October 8 when they host the Dandenong Rangers at the Tuggeranong Basketball Stadium.
