He was one of Canberra's most exciting young prospects, but former Australian junior champion Dean Reid will enter the ring for the first time in five years to headline the ACT Amateur Boxing Titles at Tuggeranong Vikings auditorium, Erindale, on Saturday night.
Reid's comeback fight won't be easy either, taking on Victorian Jason Whateley, who narrowly missed out on a London Olympics berth to Australia's youngest ever Olympic boxer, Jai Opetaia.
Reid, who now trains with the Stockade Gym in Dickson, was the Australian 81-kilogram under 19 champion in 2006. Since returning to training, he has shed almost 20 kilograms to make tonight's 91-kilogram limit.
The tournament will feature six ACT title bouts and two headline Canberra Cup bouts, winners progressing to represent the ACT at the Australian Championships next February.
Jerrabomberra brothers Kurtis and Alex Cooper should also provide some entertainment, both national champions in their own right. Kurtis will take on Victoria's Beau Penning. Alex will fight Amaeze Enyi for the 70-kilogram open junior title.
The event begins at 7pm. Tickets are $25.
