It's no surprise then that sprinter Melissa Breen was relieved to be home after an eventful two-week tour of Asia.
The London Olympian underwent blood tests on Tuesday as a precaution to determine any lingering effects from constant stomach troubles during recent competitions in Japan, Thailand and Sri Lanka.
But in a positive sign, Breen is over the worse of the calf injury that forced her to sit out the national titles, and the 22-year-old has set her sights on the world titles in Moscow in August.
''It was pretty much the worst possible two weeks you could probably ask for in trying to qualify the country,'' she said.
''It's very disappointing not to get the qualifier, but I suppose being close is better than being really far away. It's wonderful to be back home.''
Breen arrived in Japan for a series of individual races with flu-like symptoms and picked up a case of food poisoning from a traditional Japanese restaurant. She met Australian teammates - Olympic gold medallist Sally Pearson, Ash Whittaker and Monica Brennan - in Thailand, where an outdoor kitchen at the team hotel - where raw meat was sitting in the sweltering 40-degree heat - dictated a diet of rice and bread.
They stopped the clock in the women's 4x100m relay in 44.06 seconds - a mere six, one-hundredths of a second away from booking their spot to Russia.
Another dose of food poisoning from the flight from Thailand to Sri Lanka nearly ruled the Australian team out of their final chance to qualify.
But they took to the start line, only to be disqualified for an illegal changeover.
''We all got food poisoning from that plane, even though we all basically ate rice,'' she said.
''We were all sick as a dog and we were unsure if we would even race.''
While the Australian team for the world championships will not be confirmed until late July, Breen is preparing as if she will be there, after recording an A-qualifying time earlier in the season.
