Britton brothers face a long trip

Date

David Polkinghorne

It will be a long drive home to Geelong for Robert Britton after his brother Jeff's dog pipped him by a length in the $35,000 group 3 Canberra Cup (530 metres) at Narrabundah tonight.

Robert's Hutmaker got the jump and led coming into the final turn, only for Jeff's Mepunga Geordie to scoot past in the home straight to claim the $25,000 winner's cheque.

Electro Storm was a further half-length away third.

Jeff drove the dogs up this morning, while his brother flew, and the victor was planning on getting chauffeured home.

''I probably run a bit second fiddle to Robert and he beat me in the last race at Sandown today, just nutted me by that much, so I reckon it was my turn to win,'' Jeff said.

''I drove up and he didn't. He flew here, so he's doing most of the driving so I'll try to get a sleep.''

Jeff said the Canberra Cup was the biggest win of $3.70-favourite Mepunga Geordie's career, but felt if the race was a month earlier the result would have been reversed.

He said Mepunga was at his happiest sleeping around the house, but switched on as soon as he got to the track.

''With him you have to drag him out of the kennel, he doesn't want to go anywhere,'' he said.
