Burgamy and Kent up for ABL awards

February 2, 2012

Two Canberra Cavalry stars are in the running for this season's Australian Baseball League gongs.

Imported slugger Brian Burgamy has been nominated for two awards - the Helms Award for the league's most valuable player as well as the Silver Slugger, while home-town hero Steve Kent has been nominated for Relief Pitcher of the Year.

Burgamy excelled with the bat averaging .409, smashing 12 home runs and being involved in 75 runs after playing in every game this season. A batting average of more than .400 is an extremely rare feat, with Boston Red Sox player Ted Williams (.406) the last to achieve it in Major League Baseball.

Both Cavalrymen went into the season as free agents but 22-year-old Kent has since been signed by the Kansas City Royals after switching from starter to closer under the guidance of Cavalry manager Steve Schrenk.

Kent was credited with a 5-1 win-loss record, had six saves and an earned-run average of 3.26.

Most of the awards - voted for by the media, as well as team and league officials - will be announced on Wednesday, while the Helms Award will be announced at the annual Baseball Australia Diamond Awards in Sydney on February 25.
