Monty Panesar was the target of an alleged racial gaffe that led to Cricket Australia removing the ground announcer during England's game against the Chairman's XI in Alice Springs.

Ground announcer David Nixon, an ABC employee, was given his marching orders by CA shortly before lunch on Saturday after introducing Panesar, who is a Sikh, in an Indian accent.

''CA deemed the conduct of the PA announcer inappropriate and as such he will take no further part in the game,'' a CA spokesperson said.

It is understood England officials played no part in Nixon's removal.

Nixon's comments on Friday raised eyebrows when he gently mocked Joe Root for calling for a drink while batting in the heat.

He was also cheeky with the home side, calling Michael Beer into the attack by saying: ''We're going to have Beer before lunch.''
