Tickets to Canberra's opening game of the World Cup between Afghanistan and Bangladesh on Wednesday are rarer than a blue steak.

While a limited amount of tickets will be released over the coming days, the expectation is a capacity crowd of close to 12,000 will be on hand for the first of three games in the national capital.

The West Indies will take on Zimbabwe on February 24 and tournament favourites South Africa will face Ireland on March 3.

The Bangladesh team arrived in Canberra on Friday eager to erase its disappointing pre-World Cup form, with four straight losses in as many practice matches.

After two defeats to a Cricket Australia XI in Brisbane, which included Australian captain Michael Clarke, Bangladesh also went down to Pakistan and Ireland.

Bangladesh wicket-keeper/batsman Anamul Haque said the side was starting to get used to the bigger grounds in Australia and the different conditions.

"Losing is always disappointing, but we hope that we learn something from every game," Haque said.

"The first game against Afghanistan is very important and we're excited there is going to be a big crowd.

"The World Cup is very important because the Bangladesh people are crazy about cricket. When we win, everyone is very happy and laughing, and when we lose, people are crying and disappointed, so we need to perform for the people."

The Afghanistan team will arrive in Canberra on Saturday and will be welcomed to the city with a civic reception at the ACT Legislative Assembly at 4pm.

Haque has previous experience in Australia, having been the leading run-scorer at the 2012 under-19 World Cup.

The 22-year-old averages 35 from his 27 one-day internationals batting at the top of the order.

Despite struggling in its pre-World Cup warm-up games, Bangladesh have enough quality players to trouble any team, starting with all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

The 27-year-old is the world's number one ranked all-rounder in one-day international and T20 cricket.

Al Hasan has scored nearly 4000 ODI runs at an average of 34.58, while also taking 182 wickets at 27.92 with his left-arm orthodox spin. He has also had stints in the Big Bash League with the Adelaide Strikers and the Melbourne Renegades.

Veteran batsman Tamim Iqbal and paceman Mashrafe Mortaza also provide Bangladesh with plenty of leadership.

"Expectation is quite big because of the experienced players we have and the younger players we have, and good fast bowlers and spinners," Haque said.

"We need to be performing at the right place. We have Shakib Al Hasan, we have Tamim Iqbal, so we have good experience for our team."

The pressure will be on the likes of Bangladesh and Afghanistan to replace their positions in the World Cup with the decision to reduce the tournament to 10 teams for 2019.

"It's quite hard, but we need to perform," Haque said.

"We need to show that the Bangladesh team can play at the next World Cup. It's very important for our country to show what we can do."

Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in pool A with Australia, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Sri Lanka.
