The 23-year-old wicket-keeper/batsman received the honour at Cricket NSW's Steve Waugh Medal dinner at Doltone Horse in Sydney on Friday night.

Carters was a runaway winner as the standout player for the Blues in the first-class competition, racking up 130 votes, 52 clear of the runner-up, left-arm fast bowler Doug Bollinger, on 78.

Test batsman Steve Smith rounded out the top three with 69 votes.

Carters also finished in third place in voting for the Steve Waugh Medal, which is decided through a 3-2-1 vote by players at the end of each Shield and Ryobi Cup one-day match.

All-rounder Sean Abbott finished on top with 169 votes ahead of Smith (161) and Carters on 133.

Carters joined NSW this season on a rookie contract after spending the past few years with Victoria, where he made his first-class debut in 2010.

He quickly established himself in the side as an opening batsman, going on to make three centuries among his haul of 861 runs at 53.81.

Carters was the third highest run-scorer in the competition for the season behind Marcus North (886) and Tom Cooper (881), and was rewarded with a spot in the Shield team of the year.

He also stood up when it counted the most, scoring 72 in the first-innings of the Shield final against Western Australia at Manuka Oval last week.

A draw in the rain-affected game was enough for the Blues to claim the Shield for the first time since 2007-08.

Abbott received the overall player of the year award despite being made 12th man for the Shield final.

He played a large role in the Blues reaching the decider, taking 27 wickets in nine games while also picking up 16 wickets and averaging 32 with the bat in the limited overs format.

Abbott (112 votes) took out the Ryobi Cup player of the year award narrowly ahead of Australian star David Warner (99 votes) and Smith (87).

Nic Maddinson and Gurinder Sandhu were the players of the Big Bash for the Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder respectively.

Meanwhile, Wests/UC will be hoping for clear skies after the first day of the three-day Douglas Cup final against minor premier Queanbeyan was washed out on Friday.

Wests/UC needs a first-innings win to claim the title, while a draw is enough for Queanbeyan.

Play will start at 10.30am at Manuka Oval on Saturday.
