Behrendorff has also consulted with Test great Dennis Lillee as the 24-year-old bids to push for national honours next summer.

The in-form Perth Scorchers paceman will sit out the rest of Western Australia's Sheffield Shield season after scans revealed he had sustained a stress fracture in his back, something he carried through the second half of the Big Bash League.

Behrendorff was the form bowler of the competition, with the left-armer's prolific wicket-taking and ability to contain with the new ball bringing him to the attention of IPL teams.

After a heavy playing load during the past 18 months, the reigning domestic player of the year said he would put the IPL on the backburner and concentrate on getting in the best shape possible to push for a national call-up.

"There was a little bit of interest [from the IPL] and that's why I certainly considered going and thought about it, but it just wasn't the right time," Behrendorff said.

"If there's an opportunity to go [to the IPL] down the track and it fits in with everything that I'm doing, then I'd love to go.

"My first priority is to be playing good cricket domestically and also to be working as hard as I can to play cricket for Australia.

"That's my first goal, to be playing cricket for my country."

Behrendorff will miss the next three to six months and is aiming to return to the Scorchers for the Twenty20 Champions League, likely to be held in India in September.

A CT scan taken after the BBL final at Manuka Oval revealed Behrendorff had a partial fracture of the L4 lumbar vertebra.

He first noticed the injury halfway through the Big Bash, but was determined to help the Scorchers claim back-to-back titles.

"I felt fine [going into the final], it was sore, but as a fast bowler you play sore all the time," Behrendorff said.

"If they were going to try and stop me from playing the final, they would have to cut my leg off.

"It's not everyday you get a chance to play in a final, especially going back-to-back.

"I told the medical staff, 'If I'm going to be a hindrance to the team and not being able to execute my skills, you can rule me out', but if I was able to execute my skills, then I wanted to play.

"I was comfortable with the decision to play and I'm happy I did."

Behrendorff has spoken with Lillee, now the WA Cricket Association president, about what to expect with his recovery.

"He touched on that it's an unfortunate part of fast bowling and you've got to make sure you do all the right things in your rehab to make sure you come back bigger and stronger," Behrendorff said.

"He's one of the greats of Australian cricket and he's been through a fair few back issues himself, so he's happy to chat anytime."
