Behrendorff has emerged as a genuine chance of playing against England this year after Australia's fast-bowling stocks was hit with another injury blow in Bangladesh.

Pat Cummins is the last man standing from Australia's "big four" after Josh Hazlewood was sent home from the tour of Bangladesh with a side strain.

Mitchell Starc is recovering from a stress fracture in his right foot while James Pattinson is nursing a back injury.

But while Behrendorff's body has broken down as well in recent years, he never gave up the hope of playing for Australia.

The 27-year-old bounced back from an agonising injury run of his own and is desperate to take his chance after being included in Australia's Twenty20 squad to play against India next month.

Behrendorff missed the call from Australian selector Mark Waugh, but the former Australian batsman left a voicemail to justify Behrendorff's history of injury heartache.

"I listened to it when I got off the phone and I was in shock to be honest, I didn't know what to say or what to do, I was very overwhelmed and very excited," Behrendorff said.

"The message was pretty simple saying that I'd been selected in the Twenty20 side to go to India and it wasn't too much more than that, but it was very, very exciting and something that I'll certainly remember for a long time.

"It was one of those things where you're potentially fortunate that I didn't answer the call because I might not have actually been able to say anything. I might have been lost for words."

Behrendorff is determined to start the domestic season with a bang and launch into Ashes calculations with three Sheffield Shield rounds scheduled before the first Test.

He has taken 123 wickets in 29 first class games and has a burning desire to play Test cricket.

"To play in the Ashes would be a dream," Behrendorff said.

"I'm sure if you asked any Australian cricketer, they'd love to play in the Ashes. It's something I'm definitely working towards.

"I'll have to have a strong start to the Shield season and play some really good cricket for Western Australia first and then you never know what might happen.

"Any opportunity you get, if you play well and take the opportunity it can always lead to something bigger. Ideally I'll get the opportunity to play in India and be able to play well, and then who knows what might happen from there."

Behrendorff was on track for an Australian call-up last summer before a stress fracture in his left fibula derailed his season, months after suffering a stress fracture in his back.

But the Tuggeranong junior "never thought it would never come" and worked tirelessly to earn the maiden Australian call-up he felt he deserved.

"It's just one of those things with injuries, it's always hard because for me in the past I've felt like I've been going really well and then I get struck down with something," Behrendorff said.

"It's always hard to put your name up for selection if you're not playing so it's hard being injured, but I feel like I've been going quite well at the moment and I'd like to keep it that way.

"Any opportunity you get to play for Australia is a big opportunity so I've been working tirelessly to get an opportunity."

Behrendorff has taken 53 wickets in 38 domestic Twenty20 games to book his ticket to India, with the one-day and Twenty20 series' to be played from September 17 to October 13.
