The Queensland Fire skipper led from the front with an unbeaten 84 as the visitors recorded a gutsy three-wicket win at Freebody Oval on Saturday.

Fields answered the challenge from her opposite Kris Britt, who anchored the Meteors' innings with a composed 67 in their competitive total of 9-215.

The Meteors had the Fire on the ropes at 6-127, but couldn't find a way past Fields as the 28-year-old showed why she's played two Tests, 57 ODIs and 31 Twenty20s for her country with a match-winning performance, steering Queensland to 7-217 with two-and-a-half overs to spare.

Meteors coach Andrew Dawson described the brilliant knock as better than Meg Lanning's stunning 175 for Victoria at Manuka Oval in November given the importance of the victory.

The Fire has closed in on a finals spot while the Meteors are consigned to turning their energies to the Twenty20 competition.

''It makes it very, very tough for us to get through to the finals of the 50-over comp,'' Dawson said.

''I think Jodie's innings was the best innings we've seen against us this year because she knew what was at stake for both teams and the wicket was taking spin.

''Meg's innings was absolute quality, but with no disrespect to her they were setting the total so there wasn't as much pressure on her.''

Off-spinner Rhiannon Dick was the pick of the Meteors' bowlers with an economical 1-28 from her 10 overs, while the hosts were also sharp in the field, effecting three run-outs.

The Meteors will be aiming to complete a clean sweep of the Twenty20 matches on Sunday.
