Having been invited to this month's Cricket Australia board meeting in Brisbane for the first time, Cricket ACT is aiming to capitalise on the upgrades to Manuka Oval and continue the sport's growth in the city.

Cricket has the second-most participants in Canberra behind only football, with numbers boosted following Australia's 5-0 Ashes whitewash of England.

The multimillion-dollar redevelopments at Manuka Oval have opened the doors for an influx of elite matches, including last year's inaugural visit by the Australian team and hosting three games at the 2015 World Cup.

The next step is to bring training facilities up to par with other states around the country so that Canberra can put itself in the box seat to bid for Test matches and inclusion into the Twenty20 Big Bash League when expansion is put on the table.

With Cricket ACT encompassing a wider region of 1.1 million people, chairman Ian McNamee said it was imperative facilities continued to improve to keep pace with the rest of the country.

''One thing we're aiming for is this indoor training facility, that's for the long term and off-season practice,'' McNamee said.

''It's within the plans that are being discussed with the ACT government and it's very high on the list to have a facility available.

''I think you would find the AFL would be pushing for better indoor training facilities, too. We need to keep improving, the bar keeps lifting on standards and we're conscious of that.

''As this region grows, we need that facility to bring people to Canberra for coaching purposes.''

There are question marks about other facilities when Manuka Oval isn't available because of an overlap in schedules with the ground's other tenant, Greater Western Sydney.

That was shown to be true last week when a Futures League match between the ACT Comets and Western Australia at Chisholm Oval finished in less than half the allotted time.

Practice facilities at the ground are also below the standard of what is expected for a national competition.

McNamee admitted it was not a good look and said they were examining other viable options.

''It's been a poor reflection on ACT cricket with a four-day game finishing in two days without any rain and it's something that will have to be addressed,'' he said.

''We're looking very closely at Football Park. We had a look there when the national country championships were on.

''We need a better second oval and there's probably other ovals that need better dressing rooms.''

Canberra is the only Australian city outside of the traditional Test venues of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart to be involved with next year's World Cup.

Three matches will be held at Manuka Oval - Bangladesh v Afghanistan (February 18), West Indies v Zimbabwe (February 24) and South Africa v Ireland (March 3). The next goal is to have a Canberra team in the Big Bash League.

Cricket Australia has put expansion on hold, but Cricket ACT is ready to present its case for inclusion once the green light is given.

In the meantime, Sydney Thunder is likely to play a game in Canberra next season, either a pre-season match or a Big Bash fixture.

McNamee will represent Cricket ACT at a quarterly board meeting of Cricket Australia in Brisbane next month.

Cricket ACT chief Mark Vergano said it was an important step in the organisation getting a greater say on national issues.

''With a truly independent board, if the strength of your business case is strong enough, it will be judged on its merits,'' he said.
