Behrendorff was touted as a possible replacement for retired left-arm quick Mitchell Johnson for the third Test against New Zealand at the Adelaide Oval.

But national selectors instead recalled Victorian paceman James Pattinson after he played the past two Sheffield Shield games in his comeback from injury.

Hogg said selectors made the right decision in going with Pattinson over Behrendorff because of his impressive record at Test level and the fact that history showed it was unusual to carry two left-arm fast bowlers in the same team.

Hogg believed Behrendorff could be in line to make his international debut in the limited-over format later in the summer if selectors decided to rest Starc after a busy past 12 months.

"I don't mind the look of Johnson and Starc, but I don't like the look of Behrendorff and Starc in the one team," Hogg said. "I see Behrendorff getting his guernsey if Starc doesn't play. Behrendorff is pretty good with the one-day stuff, so that would be his opportunity when Starc is rested."

Behrendorff received support from former left-arm quick Dirk Nannes and former Test batsman Michael Slater as a contender for the vacant spot in the Test bowling line-up.

The 25-year-old is knocking on the door for an international call-up after brilliant performances for Western Australia in both the Sheffield Shield and the Matador Cup, and for the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash.

Behrendorff has an impressive record of 86 wickets from 22 first-class matches at an average of 25.22.

He missed the end of last season recovering from stress fractures in his back, but has been solid in his first two shield matches this summer, taking nine wickets at 22.22.

But selectors decided instead to go with Pattinson, who has taken 51 wickets at 27.07 in his 13 Tests, for the inaugural day-night Test with the pink ball.

"If the game was with a red ball in Perth, then I would think Behrendorff might be a chance, but James Pattinson is a proven Test match bowler," Hogg said.

"Peter Siddle can consider himself very unlucky, obviously Pat Cummins isn't there and Starc will need a rest soon.

"He had a massive World Cup campaign and has played a lot of cricket, so he's looking for a spell at some stage."

Behrendorff took 2-26 and 2-35 against Tasmania before backing up with 4-55 and 1-84 against South Australia.

He also played for the Prime Minister's XI and the CA XI against New Zealand at Manuka Oval in October.
