With the Meteors not having a team in the national Twenty20 competition, Mack has signed with the Melbourne Stars alongside Australian skipper Lanning.

Mack is viewed as a tremendous talent having already played for the Shooting Stars, essentially the Australia A women's team.

She broke through for her maiden century in the Women's National Cricket League last season to highlight why many astute judges view her as a player with plenty of potential.

Lanning said she was looking forward to having Mack in the Stars team and was hoping to pass on her experience.

"Her stats have been very good in the last couple of years in 50-over cricket and T20 as well," Lanning said.

"It's great that she will be coming to Melbourne and she's been performing very well over the past couple of years."

Southern Stars coach Matthew Mott said Mack would benefit greatly by being able to bounce ideas off Lanning, who is one of the most destructive batters in the women's game.

"I really like what Katie brings to the table," Mott said.

"I guess the next thing for her is to try and convert a couple of those starts into bigger scores, which will certainly get the selectors' attention.

"We talk to everyone about really making a statement with their performances at that level.

"A couple of big scores will go down well."

It's a big summer for women's cricket.

After the conclusion of the WNCL and WBBL, the Southern Stars take on India – including a match at Manuka Oval on February 2 – and New Zealand at home before travelling to India for the Twenty20 World Cup in March and April.

Lanning said the exposure for the game and additional free-to-air television coverage would help raise the sport's popularity.

"It's a great way to expose new people to the women's game and there's going to be some high quality cricket played," Lanning said.

"The game has grown on and off the field massively over the last five years and is improving every year.

"The WBBL is a great opportunity to attract some young girls to play the game and for fans to come out and watch."

The next step is for Canberra to have a team in the WBBL.

"I definitely think there will be room for expansion of the WBBL and the BBL," Lanning said.

"We're only in the first year of the WBBL, so hopefully it starts off really well and into the future we can get some new teams into the competition, which Canberra would certainly be one of them."

Lanning is also watching Mott's attempt at growing a moustache as part of Movember to raise awareness for men's health.

"There's a little bit there which is good, he's also going with the beard," Lanning laughed.

"I think he's pretty happy with it."
