The Meteors will be out to prevent another match-winning innings from Lanning when they take on the Victoria Spirit in the second round of the Women's National Cricket League in Melbourne, starting on Friday.
Lanning sent the white ball to all parts of Manuka Oval during last year's corresponding 50-over match, showcasing why the Southern Stars opener is regarded as one of the most devastating batters in the women's game. Former New Zealand international Kate Pulford and off-spinner Sally Moylan will be called on to keep Lanning in check.
But Meteors coach Andrew Dawson knows it will take a disciplined approach from his bowling attack to contain Victoria.
''Meg destroyed us in the 50-over game last year, but all of Victoria's batters are quality,'' Dawson said.
''Their top four are all Australian players and have plenty of experience, whereas we have a mix of young players coming in and those that have played for a few years. It will be a tough weekend, but I'm pretty happy with the squad we're taking down.''
Pulford's return from an Achilles injury, which forced her to miss the opening round against Western Australia, is a welcome addition to the Meteors' bowling attack.
The 33-year-old is a veteran of 46 one-day internationals and 12 T20 games for her country, taking 30 wickets at 26.36 in the 50-over format. She is also more than handy with the bat.
''Kate's experience, especially in regards to T20 cricket, is important for our side,'' Dawson said.
''Having someone who can reliably hit lines and lengths and set some plans up and be able to execute those is crucial.''
The Meteors will be desperate to bounce back after one victory from their three games to start the season in Perth. The Meteors face the Spirit in Twenty20 games on Friday and Sunday, with a 50-over game also on Saturday.
