That’s it for today, join Michael Chammas for the 10.30am start tomorrow.
STUMPS SCORE: Sri Lanka 294 (Thirimanne 91, Jayawardene 72, Bird 4/41, Starc 3/71)
WHAT HAPPENED: Australia won the toss and eventually bowled Sri Lanka out with only a few balls remaining in the day’s play. Jackson Bird and Mitchell Starc took seven wickets between them. Bird produced his best Test figures to date by bowling a series of excellent spells, Starc’s three wickets came from excellent deliveries. Sri Lanka were best served by their emergency replacement Lahiru Thirimanne who got off to a shaky start but gradually built his innings before throwing his wicket away on 91. The skipper Mahela Jayawardene also chimed in with 72, but there was nothing spectacular from the rest of the line-up.
WHAT IT MEANS: Australian captain Michael Clarke when he sent Sri Lanka in would have hoped to dismiss visitors out well before stumps but chasing a first innings total of 294 still provides his batsmen with an opportunity to set up a winning total. The Australians will need to make the most of a good wicket tomorrow and possibly Saturday as there could be variable bounce as the match goes on.
The answer to the quiz question from earlier. The four Australians to score a half-century in their final Test at the SCG over the past 20 years are:
Steve Smith against England in 2011
Shane Warme against England in 207
Steve Waugh against India in 2004
Greg Matthews against West Indies in 1993
All over for Sri Lanka's first innings. Suranga Lakmal edges to Mike Hussey who dives to his right to take the catch at second slip. Jackson Bird takes four wickets - Jackson Five puns have to wait.
Poor old Pradeep left stranded on 13. Sri Lanka all out for 294.
Pradeep on fire. He rockets to his highest Test score with boundaries off both Mitchell Johnson and Jackson Bird.
Frustration for the Aussie bowlers. Everytime the ball is on the stumps it's hit, otherwise it's play and misses from the tailenders. There is no chance of Australia batting today, a wicket in the next four overs will mean stumps.Back to top
Chappelli seemed to think that Nuwan Pradeep could not bat, but that was an exquisite shot off his toes through mid-wicket.
Followed by an attempted leave that comes off the outside and goes to third man for a single.
Herath goes this time. The Sri Lankans are a proper tail with the players now throwing the bat at everything. This one is skied and Siddle just holds on to the catch adjacent to the bowlers' stumps. Another wicket for Jackson Bird, he has three wickets.
Sri Lanka 9/272, Suranga Lakmal is 2 not out.
Starc doing his thing again. That was an absolute corker, Chandimal had no chance as the late in-swinging yorker cannons into his stumps.
Sri Lanka 8/271. Chandimal gone for 24, Herath is not out five.
The wickets are tumbling now. Dhammika Prasad did not last very long and is out caught at mid-on after he failed to get hold of an attempted pull shot.
Good catch low down by Mitchell Starc. Chandimal is 16, Herath is the new batsman. Sri Lanka 7/256.
Sri Lanka lose two in a row
Thirimanne falls nine short of his maiden Test century as Australia collect their sixth and seventh wickets.
Lahiru Thirimanne has been denied his hundred by a spectacular catch by Dave Warner. Thirimanne attempts another big shot and it skews off the outside edge and Warner dives full length to take the catch behind point.
Thirimanne scored 91, Chandimal not out 12. Sri Lanka 6/250.Back to top
Lahiru Thirimanne is now into the 90s with successive fours from Peter Siddle's bowling.
More trivia: Name the four Australians in the past 20 years who have scored a half-century in the final Test at the SCG.
Mitchell Starc strikes again, this time Angelo Mathews plays at a deliver angled across him and he nicks it to Michael Hussey at second slip. Mathews gone for 15, Thirimanne is not out 75. Sri Lanka 5/222.
Sri Lanka lose their fifth wicket
Mitchell Starc finds the edge of Angelo Mathews bat, then the middle of Mike Hussey's hands at second slip. Sri Lanka 5 for 222.
Thirimanne will not be bogged down by Lyon and launches a shot that just clears the rope at deep mid-off.Back to top
DROPPED! Lyon gets a vicious turner that grips and bounces. Thirimanne gets a thin edge misses Matthew Wade's gloves and hits the keeper on the shoulder.
Sri Lanka are getting a hurry along. Thirimanne hits Lyon for successive boundaries before Angelo Mathews tucks into an off drive from the bowling of Mitchell Starc.
Sri Lanka raise the 200
Sri Lanka fight back after Tea, raise their 200 and look to put the Aussies on the back foot.
A lucky four for Lahiru Thirimanne. He slashes at a shortish ball and only just clears Michael Clarke at first slip.
Thirty-one overs to go today, so it looks like a 6pm finish.
After taking nearly 20 balls to get off the mark, Angelo Mathews smacks two fours in as many over including a stand-and-deliver smack through the covers off Mitchell Johnson's bowling.Back to top
