  • Honestly, is there any point in batting on today?

SL have absolutely ZERO chance of getting the runs....

To me, this is what has destroyed cricket. Although the bogans would love it

    • It's not down to one player, Davo. It called a morale boost.

In additiona, the SriLankan openers would have been wondering all night if they were batting or if they were going to be in the field. They would have been uncertain...and hey, look...it worked wonders.

    • Morale Boost? Confidence? LMAO!

Its will be the wrong sort of confidence. Look what happened against a real team a few weeks ago.

Flogging a rubbish team like SL is a waste of time. Not that it matters, they will rotate 1/2 of the team anyway.

This is to get them ready to play against England for the ashes? They would be better off playing an Australia a V Australia b game - at least they would get some competiton.

    • My guess, and I know nhing about cricket is this:
Sri Lanka will be looking to "wrap up the tail"
Australia will be looking to consolidate on a big score, shurring Sri Lanka out of the match.
They will be playing on a three-day-wicket.
Australia will hope it doesn't rain.
Johnson will be looking for a "test ton"
Clarke's toenails will be auctioned as a memoribilia for his record breaking something yesterday.

    • C'mon let's get real - Sri Lanka would have trouble competing with our top 3 State Shield teams. What a bore, and believe me, this series is a waste of time if we get flogged by the pomms next year - and I love test cricket, but playing teams like this is a total waste of time.
Clarke if you think you are the best batsman playing the game now, prove it next year against England, not against second-raters.

Last year new zealand was the lowly ranked side that was brought over and it did not go to plan for the acb, India was the competitive team that was brought over but we did not stand a chance with the doctored pitches and the umpires on the aussies side.

This year south africa was brought over and you were beaten easily, now it's time for the sacrificial lamb sri lanka to be beaten to keep you aussies happy.

I’ve also been told that the Sri Lankan cricket board themselves do not fancy promoting Test cricket Anyway, I for sure don’t give a Rats if we play the Aussies or not.

From what I have heard the Sri Lankans are upset about the talking going on in the field by the aussies, in particular David Warner talking while the bowler is running in. Australia is notorious for this type of bad sportsmanship.

Sledging and a bit of chat isnt bad sportsmanship. And if ppl are talking when bowler is coming in the batsman is well within his rights to walk away and not face up, so no use complaining about that. I think they are getting players talking confused with crowd as they arent used to crowds the size of Australias.

Why would you declare with 3 days left in the game and when of your batters in the 70s- and a lead under 300. Clearly you dont know cricket

In addition, the SriLankan openers would have been wondering all night if they were to bat first thing this morning, or of they were going to be in the field. Mind games are a great thing.

They bowled the Sri Lankans out for 156, and they were bowled out for a smidgen over a 300 run lead, the english will not make the same mistake with them come ashes time, the top order and middle order is still not settled.

                      • Australia beware. This is a typical Sri Lankan trap. Let the opposition get way out in front, then throw away some early wickets, Australia become relaxed and comfortable, rest some players - Watson and Warner, bowl more spinners, look at and think about their tattoos, miss some easy catches, and soon as you look around, SL are ahead on the scoreboard. Australia then get into a panic and make simple mistakes, and get nervous. This match will grind out to be a draw on day four (day five is predicted to be rain).

                                    • What a pitiful performance from the Sri Lankans. They appeared to be resigned to losing this match from nearly the first ball on Boxing Day. As a Melbournian I was looking forward to going to the MCG tomorrow, but it looks like the test will be all over. What a disgrace. Might as well not even invite this team to Australia if this is what we can expect.

The guys around me keep leaving for the bar, texting, playing farting games, hitting each other on the arm and comparing body parts. To be fair they do go wild when there is a wicket then quickly get back to the action. Limited attention span indeed.

The MCG would have been full and the series would be on a knife edge with the decider in Sydney to come. These 3 match test series are killing test cricket.

                                            • I was bitterly disappointed with the article on The Age on Wednesday declaring that the spectators got what they wanted on the first day.
Why would Baum write such rubbish? The spectators wanted a game, not a joke.
After the first day, it was apparent that the whole summer of cricket would be a complete waste of time. Same thing happened last time we invited these useless Sri Lankan's to play here?

It should be pointed out Australia need to play a series (Home & Away) every four years so no way round playing these teams.

Clarke & Warners offies will play a part too. Good time to experiment with team top order batting too now will soon to be 2 nil. Anybody with any other selection tips?

                                              • My selection tip is for watson to not play.

Also im not sure why they would rest Siddle though as he isnt part of the One day and T20 set up..

Probably rest johnson (based on best performer being rested).

Or alternatively they play all five bowlers.

That my man is all that matters. India, Paki's, Sth Africa, India, it's all practice - practice to destroy the arch enemy - and IF we don't, then these lead-up games have been worthless.

                                                    • I don't think I've even seen a test match conclude with team being dismissed after the fall of 7 wickets before. The Lankans have well and truly been battered and bruised. Kind of sad to see, they are capable of so much better.
