Your best result for the Aussies in this Test will be a draw.

If England get a 270+ lead then it's an unbeatable position.

Looking forward to fine of batting, some great bowling, some witty commentary from Jesse, some classics from Ryan and Stumpy and less comments from Aussies involving a world record attempt at dummy spitting.

Monty I am actually enjoying the world record attempt, and confirms what we already know ,bad losers, and even worse winners and awesome whingers!

I think it makes the English look like bad winners and the Aussie bad losers. Both teams may need more practice at each as it is not the natural order of things, is it.

  • While I personally think Australia were likely to go on win if the rain hadn't fallen, England have been 3 down for not much every Test yet have gone on to post decent scores.

Cricket is ultimately unpredictable when played by two teams out of form. For example, Agar's record breaking innings and Panesar & Anderson holding out a determined Aussie attack in Cardiff.

Sawgboy, at only 3 down, anything is possible. To say otherwise just exposes either your own bias or lack of understanding of the game.

    • So let's get this straight:

Watson - not going to bowl
Harris - so broken he looks like a straw house about to be blown over by a piggy-hunting wolf
Bird/Siddle - no wickets so far in this innings
Lyon - you're counting on Nathan Lyon.

And, even if Australia get the 5 wickets soon, their batting line-up (except Clarke) is hopeless.

      3-0

Bres is having the time of his life. As is Swanny.

Some amazing cover drives and every single extra run they score creates another crease in Clarke's brow.

This game ain't over but...Bres and Swanny are making sure that it'll be very hard for the Aussies to get back into this match.

I can understand you getting tired and distracted with waffle from Monty and co - by the by have you guys organised a round of badger walloping or whatever else you do now you do not an empire and no locals to kick about?

Now starts the inevitable question, formerly charged to Jimmy....What would Aus be like in this Test if not for Harris? Are Aus a one man bowling attack? Not shit-stirring, its just a question that was thrown around when all Eng's wickets came from Anderson.

Approaching the 1st test, Harris was broken and Lyon was not in form. No way that either of them could have been picked.

                                • Typical Australian team ..... get the wickets they need early & then bowl crap for the rest of the morning. Whatever happened to going in for the kill? Whatever happened to showing some mongrel & knocking their heads off? So, instead of chasing 250 or less we're now chasing 300 because we let the Poms off. Good work Australia ... you deserve to be beaten.

In case you hadn't been keeping score Monty, you're already there - England barely won the first test, ok, the second was a very strong English victory, but Australia would have won the third test without the intervention of the weather. And here we are again, with the match very much in the balance for the fourth test. England may indeed be stronger than Australia at the moment, but if Australia is rubbish, England is only just barely better, judging by this series results.

                                    Australia: be proud of him.

Warnie would probably have been kicked out of this genY Aussie team for misbehaving. I mean he isn't the school prefect type, more like one of the lads who would get the cane for smoking up the back.
This is the problem with this team it is totally overmanaged!

                                  • 2-0 so far? Sure, that's what the scoreboard says, but 15 runs more for Australia in the first test, and a fifth day in the third test instead of rain and you would be looking at 1-2. I don't know about you, but the difference between the teams looks to be about three fifths of bugger all to me...

You can go on and on about 14 runs and rain in Manchester (Rain in Manchester - who'd have predicted that?)

There is one fact, and Michael Clarke knows it: it's 2-0. Please accept it.

Third umpire has got memo on this and now realises that if ICC wants a few heads as an encouragement to the others backing Hill on anything not the best move. 180 degrees a safe bet.

The psychological value of a win here would be immeasurable for the last test and Oz series but long way to go. Jesse - I know only a few tests here but do you have stats on how would this rate as a last innings winning score (including other games - not just Oz - England over the years) if they did pull it off?

                                            • Great to see the Women's cricket taking place at the same time as the Ashes, but kind of annoying to see that the commentary on this website has conflated the two together. It might have been better to set up two links for this. Easy enough to determine the difference between the two with the names, etc, but I saw a posting earlier that said "Australia has declared" and had to go through the Live Ashes website to see what was going on? I know, I should get with it, but let's keep the focus on the Ashes test, which is what the SMH has billed this as.

Alternative: On the face of it the Poms could be thought to have had a reasonable first session amassing a score most commentators thought looked a winner (although 5 wickets in the session is hard to deny). Oz back in thick of it with great after lunch session.

Game taking more twists than: Putty Road (NSW); Great Ocean Rd (Vic); Mt Lindsay Highway (Qld) - take your pick as appropriate. (Sorry for other states).

                                              • Agreed - it was getting a little worrying with the ease they were getting them towards the end. I also think the game has swung hence earlier reference to twists. Oz on top with bowling in 1st innings then a good start with Rogers and Watson, England pulling them back in yesterday morning, three quick wickets to Oz then Bell getting amongst it, Oz claiming wickets but going for runs this morning, then after lunch grabbing the game.

Yes for most of the posts it is pretty clear which test we are following, but that "declared" one threw me because there was no reference to which test and I knew that Aust were all out in their previous innings! I have been enjoying your banter with a few others on this blog. Good to see that it is mostly on the cricket and not this jingoistic stuff! More stats, I love that stuff!

                                                • I'm surprised how negative the English commentators were. Australia haven't gone 7 games in a row without a win by having starch. Good fight back by England after losing their way in the first innings.

Maybe we can try and sneak some of the Southern Stars in the next match they seem to be going alright.

The Aussies have lost so much talent in the last few years, Ponting/Warne/Hussey/Hayden/McGrath etc and I think there is a bit of a vacuum in Aussie Cricket at the moment..Australia have always had good Captains though and under Clarke's direction his team can be world beaters again in @ 6 months - a year. He has a nucleus of a good team, and the team always wins over individuals. Clarke's a team player. I think England have some fantastic individual players. The Aussie's deserve this match..

I would always much rather watch the Darwin Football League rather than the AFL - of course. Bring on bowls from the South Launceston District competition.

Seriously...you need to look at some positives from this test. Lyon showed he was clearly a test bowler, Harris was a matchwinner (should have been), Rogers was great, Warner was dynamite. There are still clearly some weak links but England were very lucky (and took their chance when given the sniff...and a couple of dodgy decisions). If you can't stand the sight of the other dide celebrating you need to get out and play a bit more yourself, see what it's like.

Other than that, and some dodgy umpiring we should probably have won this. You either look for someone else or stick with them and wait for them to improve. I think we can say from this test that Warner, Harris and Lyon should have played the first test, and I think Hughes is still much better than Smith.

He needs a dose of the Matt Haydens - score gizillions of runs at Shield level to prove you have what it takes - after repeated failures at test level. Looking good for 20 does not cut the mustard. Steve Smith may need the same treatment - remember the Waughs. Watson - well what to do with him - mentally and technically brittle perhaps. Trouble is who do you promote? Rogers is perhaps a success (we will see what with two tests not being the measure of a career) but look how long it took for them to recognise him.

The usual Khawaja bashers have come out as usual, unlike Cowan who had 19 tests in a row or Hughes who had 2 full series Khawaja has only had 3 games so far and top scored in Lords in his first game and got a howler last game, he will come good for us but key now is to give

Peter Siddle caught at mid-off by Jimmy Anderson off Stuart Broad, giving Broad a 6-wicket haul for the innings and an 11-wicket haul for the match. Australia all out for 224. England wins by 74 - and wins the Ashes (which it was already guaranteed to retain). Stunning, stunning, stunning fightback today. Absolutely ruthless!!!

Shame on them. As John Howard, cricket tragic, would say: a case of the Kim Beazleys - no ticker from the bastmen. The bowlers must be wondering what they have to do to get the team a win.

It's hard to comprehend how Australia went from controlling this match so decisively to losing it so convincingly. After a century opening stand between David Warner and Chris Rogers, and encouraging starts from Usman Khawaja and Michael Clarke, Australia simply capitulated under pressure primarily inflicted by Stuart Broad. In that final session Australia lost a remarkable (not in a good way) 9-104 in 35.3 overs to relinquish what looked set to be a morale-boosting victory. Rather than leave Chester-le-Street emboldened Australia now has to cope with more proof of how frail its batting is.

This is a low scoring ground and 250 was par for the first innings. AU were only ever a little ahead of this game. Once ENG posted a lead of 250 it was going to be very hard to chase. The way they play at the moment AU batting is always just 2 balls from oblivion.

So this match is true to form, AU can win a session or two - even the odd day but over 5 days as it has been for the last 2 years far too much depends on Clarke, Rodgers is not the future.
