So it has proven each Friday afternoon at Graf Park in Yagoona where almost 300 primary school girls from a spread of cultural backgrounds have been gathering to pursue their love of the sport.

The Cricket NSW-run six-week program has attracted girls from 10 different schools, bringing together participants of Middle Eastern, Asian and Subcontinental descent, among others.

Underpinning the program is Cricket Australia's Growing Cricket For Girls fund, a four-year $6m commitment to aid clubs, school and associations in promoting the growth of the sport.

"My favourite thing is probably batting," Rukaya Issa, a huge Shane Warne fan who plays wearing a head scarf and attends Malek Fahad Islamic School.

"I've been playing with my cousins. I've watched it on TV, I've been to one live game and it was Australia versus England and England won."

Amna Rahman of Berala Public School considers herself an all-rounder.

"I've been playing with my brother, he goes to Auburn District Cricket Club so I go to training with him," she said.

"I also went to watch Pakistan verse Australia. Apparently Pakistan lost the series."

Female cricket is booming and over the past year, participation has almost doubled from 161 to 310 teams in Sydney Thunder and Sixers girls-only leagues.

"It's been phenomenal what's happened," Goszko said.

"It's allowed girls to come and play cricket who had probably never played before and they don't have to play against the boys, they can play in the all-girls team and play with their friends and it goes for two hours.

"When I was growing up it was all day and you got to field maybe one ball all day and it's not like that any more."

The girls play modified rules during the Friday afternoon sessions which means every player faces and bowls the same amount of balls.

Week one was made up of drills as an introduction to the sport, and now the girls are playing competitive games.

For recently retired Australian cricketer and Sydney Thunder captain Alex Blackwell, watching so many girls come together to play cricket makes her believe she's left the game in excellent hands.

"There's kids from multiple different schools and very different backgrounds, this is cricket as we see it today," Blackwell said.

"We know that it's a game that's growing all around the world. It's a sport that's growing and we've got such a diverse community here in Australia, to see the game reaching those pockets of our community, that's really pleasing."
