Tuggeranong finished a perfect two days of cricket when they thrashed Wests-UC in the SCG Cup at Chisholm on Sunday, their total of 5-331 proving too big for their under-strength opponent.
It followed Tuggeranong's outstanding outright win over defending champion Queanbeyan - bowling the Bluebags out for just 77 in the second innings - in the Cricket ACT two-day competition on Saturday.
But while the team was riding on a high after the 135-run win over Wests-UC, stand-in captain Michael Barrington insisted Tuggeranong had its feet firmly on the ground.
''We know we've got a pretty decent side; it's just about everyone chipping in and contributing,'' he said. ''It's a matter of going out and playing good cricket … to back up two excellent days is really good.
''Wests were missing a lot of first-graders … we'll keep our heads down and keep working away. We know we can't look too far forward.''
Justin Haywood kick-started the Tuggeranong innings with 82 and was well backed up by Barrington (79) and David Griffith (53) on the way to a huge total of 331.
Wests-UC's bid to advance in the SCG Cup wasn't helped by the absence of some of its key players. Opening batsman Darren Richards scored a century on Saturday but wasn't on the field on Sunday along with Ben Oakley, Brendan Duffy and Dale Riley. Without their stars, the young team fought hard but could manage only 196 in reply.
Tuggeranong will now fight with defending SCG Cup champion Queanbeyan for the right to advance to the next stage of the competition.
Despite struggling in the two-day competition, the Bluebags got back on track with a win against Eastlake at Freebody Oval. The match was reduced to 29 overs each because of a wet pitch, and skipper Aaron Ayre (72 not out) led Queanbeyan to 4-178.
Most of the Eastlake batsmen got starts, but none could go on to a big total and it finished at 8-122 from its 29 overs.
Queanbeyan won the SCG Cup as well as the Cricket ACT Twenty20, one-day and two-day competitions last year.
